Weekday Weather Forecast – Jan 15th – Jan 17th

Good Morning, everyone. Hope you made it into the new year without too much of a hangover. The weather seems to have come through pretty well, with the North Atlantic circulation in full swing. We’re currently sitting on the southern flank of a major low pressure system over the North Atlantic, and it looks as if we’ll get an even stronger system, possibly a major storm, on Wednesday, as a fast moving peripheral low will form. These little bastards are notoriously unpredictable, so be ready for anything.

Monday started off wet. And while the strongest rain may have moved off, it will remain wet for most of the day. It will get progressively colder throughout the day. Daytime highs of around 11°C were registered at my own weather station in Ballincollig at 0615h, while nighttime lows will bottom out at 4-5°C. It will also be a rather windy day, although gale to storm force winds will remain confined to the usual coastal spots.

Tuesday will see a significant drop in temperature, with daytime highs of 4-5°C being reached early in the morning. Temperatures will drop down to 0°C or lower by lunchtime, and remain there for the rest of the day. Snow showers will start affecting the Cork area from lunchtime onward, and persist way into the evening. Accumulations of 3-4cm are possible, though not certain, even in Cork city, so take care when driving home after work. Oh, and did I mention that we’ll also be looking at gale to storm force winds in Cork for a time during the evening?

Wednesday will start the great thaw. While the day will start cold, with temperatures of around 0°C, we will be up to 11°C by the evening. Following a reasonably dry start, an area of heavy rainfall will move in from around lunchtime, and stay for the rest of the day as that peripheral low moves through. While the worst of the winds will remain confined to the North, we’re looking at gale to storm force winds during the afternoon and evening.
