Windy Weekday Weather Forecast – September 19th – September 21st

Good morning, everyone. I hope you made it to work safely, or stayed home. Looking at the damage and wind speeds registered in the Cork area, it is quite clear in my eyes that Met Éireann dropped the ball big time with regards to Storm Ali. The Northwestern counties were well into “Condition Red” territory, and even Cork and Limerick got winds that were much stronger than the “Condition Yellow” warning we got. The good news is that the worst has passed and that winds are dying down. As far as the wind is concerned, we can expect a breather for the next couple of days, but that doesn’t mean that the weather will get any better.

Following that extremely turbulent start to Wednesday, winds will continue to ease as the core of Storm Ali moves towards Scotland over the next few hours. We’re still looking at lively winds from westerly directions, so the odd gust might still catch you unaware. Temperatures peaked this morning at around 15°C, and for the rest of the day, we can expect a slow slide in temperatures, down to lows of around 7-8°C tonight.

Thursday will start of cool and stay that way. In fact, it looks as if we can expect daytime highs in the single figures, at around 8-9°C, while night-time lows will drop to 4-5°C. Winds will be dead calm, something that will feel all the more eerie given today’s wind speeds. However, from around 0600 onwards, an area of heavy rainfall will move in, and when I write heavy, believe me, I mean it. I expect around 20mm of rainfall to come down between 0600 and 1800, and local flooding is very much possible, so be careful on your commute!

Friday will see winds pick up again, becoming fresh to strong, and swinging around to westerly directions. It will be slightly warmer, with daytime highs of 13-15°C, but it will definitely not feel warmer. Night-time lows will drop down to 4-5°C, so better get those winter duvets out! The day will start out dry, though light rain is possible from lunchtime onward. As for the weekend, well Sunday is shaping up like a repeat of Wednesday.
